Ductless Air Conditioning: The Right Solution for Spaces Without Ductwork

Not every space in a home connects to the central duct system. Garages, room additions, finished basements, older homes that were never set up for forced air — these are common situations I run into regularly throughout Plymouth and the western Twin Cities suburbs where ductless air conditioning either can’t reach or would cost more to extend to than it’s worth.

That’s where ductless mini-split systems make sense. I install them regularly for exactly these situations, and when they’re the right fit they work extremely well.

How Ductless Air Conditioning Works

A ductless system has two main components — an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air handlers mounted on the wall. The two are connected by a small conduit running through the wall, which carries refrigerant lines and electrical wiring. No ductwork required.

Each indoor unit conditions the space it’s installed in independently. A single outdoor unit can support multiple indoor heads, which makes ductless a practical solution for cooling several rooms or zones from one system — without running a single duct.

Where They Work Best

The situations I recommend ductless most often are pretty consistent. A garage that gets used as a workshop or home gym in the summer. A room addition that wasn’t tied into the existing duct system. An older home with radiator heat and no existing ductwork. A finished basement or bonus room that the central system doesn’t reach effectively.

In all of these cases, extending existing ductwork is either impractical or expensive enough that a ductless system is the more sensible path. Installation is relatively straightforward — one small penetration through the wall, no major construction, and the system is up and running.

Zoned Comfort

One of the genuine advantages of ductless systems is zone control. Each indoor unit operates independently, so you’re only cooling the spaces you’re actually using. If the garage workshop is the only place you need cooling on a given day, that’s the only unit running. For a home with multiple ductless zones, that level of control makes a real difference in how efficiently the system operates.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Ductless systems cost more upfront than a window unit or portable AC — that’s a fair comparison to make. But they’re also more efficient, more effective, and they don’t take up a window or require hauling in and out each season. For a space you’re going to use consistently year after year, the investment makes sense.

They also require the same seasonal attention as any other cooling equipment. An annual check before cooling season keeps the system running the way it should and catches anything that needs attention before you need the unit to perform.
